They belong in a museum: How to travel the city like you’re Indiana Jones
Let these cosplaying explorers show you their city
On a cold fall day, I met Indiana Jones — and his friend, Indiana Jones — for a jaunt around Central Park. We didn’t make it far before getting stopped.
“Dr. Jones! What’s the occasion?” shouted a park-goer.
The Joneses — dressed in identical fedoras, brown leather jackets, and canvas slacks — whipped around. Brooklyn-based actor and outing organizer Alex Curtis called out our answer:
“It’s just a great day to be Indy,” Curtis replied.
With the New York Jones, a group of dudes who dress up like Indiana Jones and galavant across the five boroughs, it’s always a great day to be Indy.
Led by Curtis, the loose crew hiked through a former cement mine in Rosendale, New York; toured the secretive, members-only Explorers Club on the Upper East Side; and got chased by a bear outside Van Slyke Castle in Wanaque, NJ. Most of their excursions, however, have covered parts of the city New Yorkers pass by every day: Prospect Park, the New York Public Library, the Met Museum and Central Park.
