NYC(inema) 2k: What’s the most ‘New York’ romcom of the 2000s? [Members Only]
No, Matthew McConaughey never successfully passed for a Staten Islander
We’ve spent the past several weeks arguing about the greatest New York City movies of the 21st century (have you voted yet???) and now that we’re down to the Final Four, anything resembling a romcom has been knocked out of the running by the likes of Uncut Gems and The Wolf of Wall Street. Never say it isn’t a man’s world!
We had a handful romcom classics in the initial list of 64 — Kissing Jessica Stein; Hitch; How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days — but the genre wasn’t heavily represented on the list, and more to the point, there are just so, so many romcoms that have been set and shot in New York in the past 26 years.
Per a DM I received from my friend Sylvia when I first started posting about the bracket, “There was a whole period where all romcoms were in ‘generic big city New York’ — there could be a mini bracket of which is the New Yorkiest.”
And damn if she wasn’t right! So while we’re not making a formal separate bracket, we are taking this Friday for a little members-only discussion of some of the movies that didn’t make it into the wider competition, and to come to a highly subjective and arbitrary answer to the question: what is the most “New York” New York romcom of the 21st century? Let’s dive in.
