Where to go to actually feel scared in New York City, according to experts
Ghost tour guides and The Bowery Boys share picks for the top truly scary places in the city in this members-only bonus.
Last week, Rick Paulas made the case in our pages that New York isn't particularly spooky. It's hard to wander around creepy old historical architecture and hunt for ghosts when the architecture now holds a Starbucks and the ghosts were priced out to North Jersey long ago. So in some cases, tour guides have to get creative.
But, with the city's ancient, many-layered past and a population with 2 million more people than all of Transylvania, you can't outrun ghosts that easily. You can still find some spaces to feel the prickle of the city's ghoulish history on your skin.
For this special members-only post, Rick asked his sources – ghost jocks, the lot — to give their picks for some actually scary places in the city. Plus, Greg Young, co-host of The Bowery Boys podcast — which is hosting a Ghost Stories of Old New York event at Joe's Pub on Oct. 26 — was kind enough to share their picks too.
