The new Ghostbusters movie wastes its return to New York City

The first two movies were at least a goofy reflection of the 1980's city and anxieties about it

There are a bunch of things you can say about Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, many of them not very nice: it’s got an overwrought title, the main villain is CGI crud, it strains itself reaching for lore and Easter eggs, and it’s dreadfully dull and self-serious about the importance of being a Ghostbuster. You can also add that the movie is extremely divorced from the actual New York-ness of the movies that came out 40 years ago and are still the only good entries in what is now, incredibly, a five-movie franchise.
